Denali National Park

6/28-7/2

We free docked at BLM land so that we were close to Denali to enter the park early on the 28th. We got to Denali National Park mid morning and got our bearings about our campground, bus ticket (can only access the park past mile 15 via park bus) etc from the visitors center. We then made our way to Teklanika campground mile 29 where we were going to stay for the next four nights. We hung around the campground prepping ourselves for an early morning the next day. 6/28 we took the Denali bus to Wonder Lake. This whole trip from our site to Wonder Lake (mile 100) takes a full day. Finn and Ailish were terrific having to spend so many hours on a bus. We lucked out with a great driver who gave us a good deal of information about the land and went out of his way so that we could see some wildlife. We saw two wolves (grey artic and black) which was rare since only 70 wolves live in the entire park. We saw Caribou, Moose and Grizzlies and many birds along our route. We were also lucky that we had a pretty clear day which meant we actually saw the peak of Denali. Many people visit the park and never really see the mountain because of the clouds the weather can be very unpredictable here. The next two days we spent around our campground. We didn't want to have to go on the bus again since it was a 6 hour commitment and we were required to bring car seats for the kids. Since you can hike anywhere in Denali we made our own paths. We hiked along the Teklanika River, got attacked by a Mew Gull, hung out with sled dogs, did a little biking with Finn (Zoë) and enjoyed some much needed downtime at our site. All in all we enjoyed Denali, the vast openness of the park but it was not the most beautiful place we have experienced. Maybe we are jaded because we have witnessed some awesome mountains and vistas already or maybe we built up our expectations of Denali. Next up the Kenai Peninsula.
